2002 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 sxi
Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.6 sxi

I have a 52 plate astra 1.6 sxi.It is using approxamitaly 1 litre of oil per 800 miles. There are no visable leaks from the engine. When driving there is a trace of smoke from the exhaust when you accelerate. The end of the exhaust is black. In the 7 months that i have had the car i have now used approx. 9 litres of oil.what do you think the problem might be?

That sounds like a lot of oil for an Astra. What is the engine temperature gauge reading? Engines tend to burn more oil the hotter they are.

Check the running temperature and then look into whether or not the coolant levels are correct if the temperature looks high.

Normal running temperatures are anywhere between 80 - 100 degrees (depending on conditions).

coolant levels are fine and the temp is sitting between 60 - 80

Sounds like its burning the oil...

It could be getting into the chamber via a dodgy valve stem seal or through a dodgy piston ring, Are you good with the spanners?
