Does the alternator light come on when ignition is switched on ? Simple test to check alternator output .If you dont have a meter , most fast fit centres will check FOC while you wait if not too busy .

check the alternator output at the battery with a voltmeter with engine running and lights and heater on full, should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts if lower then check the voltage drop between the main output of the alt and the + of the battery (should read less than .5v and do the same from battery - to the alt body that too should read less than .5v if it is for example 3volts then that is the amount of voltage you are losing between alt and battery in poor connections etc. also as whittinghame says make sure you have a battery light with ign on and not started if not then make sure there is 12v on the small wire to the alt (wire unplugged) if yes bridge this wire to earth to see if the light comes on,if it does then alt has failed.
