2004 Vauxhall Astra engine noise when accelarating

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.4 Life
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My 54 Astra has done about 86000 miles. Over the last few days I have noticed a sort of high pitched noise from the engine as I accelerate. To start with I thought it was just tyre noise but it persists whatever the road surface. When I lift off the pedal the noise goes but comes back when I press down again. I have just noticed a fluid leak under the car, mostly on the nearside by the front wheel. I'm not sure what the fluid is but it doesn't appear to have a smell and I have checked the oil which is fine. Can anybody suggest what is wrong and are the two problems linked?

Check if it's coolant , which could indicate water pump leaking as this is driven by cambelt and might be the cause of noise .If water pump , you better get it replaced asap as belt can fail / jump causing damage to engine .

Thanks very much for your reply. I have taken it to my local garage and it seems that the actual problem is a hole in the gearbox, presumably caused by road debris although I don't recall driving over anything. Not sure if that is causing the noise but it does seem likely as the gearbox was dry.
Thanks again.
