2001 Vauxhall Astra malfunction light

just bought this car last week took it for a long run today after about 40 miles the malfunction light came on and i noticed the temperature gauge went down to nothing if i stopped in traffic the gauge would go up to about 80 then when car moved back to nothing after getting to where i was going and letting car cool down ( though it wasnt over heating ) i left it a few hours got back in started up no warning light but all the way home yemperature gauge stil never moved any idea what problem could be

Could be engine coolant temp sensor .

thanks for yur quick reply bought the sensor this morning was only a £5 fitted it made no difference gauge still not moving now engine management light back on

thanks for your quick repies whittingehame as i said just bought the car so took it back to garage bit of an arguement but he is going to fix the problem for me

picked the car up today took it for a run about 5 miles it still sits on zero unless im stationairy then it goes up is there any way i can tell if he has done the job or just fobbed me off ???

Job hasn't been done right if still operating as before . Get it back for fixing .

sounds like cowboys went back today saying car not done right guy turned up with an old thermostat in his hand i asked wheres the cambelt & waterpump he said didnt need it so he reckons he has took off cambelt fixed thermo and replaced old cambelt
