Mpg issue

2007 Vauxhall Astra 1.7 cdti
Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2007
Variant: 1.7 cdti
due to fuel prices decided to get a diesel (astra 1.7cdti). Vauxhall quote 56mpg combined which i knew i'd get no where near. However i was expecting at least 45 to 50 mpg, so as you can imagine i was deeply gobsmacked when i worked out my mpg at a very disapointing 41mpg!! i do 42miles round trip to work which is A roads and 15miles on motorway doing 70-80mph.

i've been looking into remapping or getting one of those plug in box thing's but not sure if there safe and worth while also where to take it to get done... i live in south yorkshire if anybody can recommend a remap garage ect.... cheers

depends on your driving style as to what your mpg is,check all your tyre pressures are correct as this will affect mpg,if you have roof bars or mudflaps fitted this will increase drag when driving meaning higher fuel consumption, are you getting any warning lights up on dash, any running problems with the car, could be something as simple as a sensor reading out of spec eg coolant temp sensor or air temp sensor could cause overfuelling,
