2002 Vauxhall Astra engine running rough

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.8 SRI
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The problem is with my dads car. When starting from cold the engine revs higher than usual just for a second as if you have your foot on the accelerator. The revs then drop but it does not idle correctly. The revs go up and down and it seems like the engine will cut out. It seems like it is misfiring. The car is undriveable when its like this. After a few minutes everything is fine though. There are no warning lights

My dad has since told me that it is doing this all the time now, hot or cold and he has to change down a gear or two to make any progress. Have you any idea where the engine coolant temperature sensor is and how can we tell if it is the problem?
Thanks
