my 1998 1.8 vauxhall astra has developed a humming/rumbling noise when driving 35mph up to 65mph the noise seems to go quiet when turning right and louder turning left ive replaced both driveshafts with secondhand ones thinking it could be one of the cv joints ive also checked both wheelbearings (the usual method) they seem fine i ve been told it could be the diff thats the problem as vauxhalls are known for this i am also wondering if could have anything to do with the powersteering can anyone help any suggestions or advice would be a great help thanks

As suggested in post below , wheel bearing . It changes when turning as load is transferred . You may not have any play at wheel when you checked it and wouldn't be able to spin it fast enough by hand to hear bearing being noisy / knackered .

if you spin the wheel by hand you should be able to feel any resistance caused by a knackered bearing,if you listen closely there will be a slight noise if worn bearing,if it was a power steering pump problem it would be noisey all the time, check your brakes are`nt metal to metal
