Gears Jamming? Clutch Problem?

Vauxhall Astra Estate 2001 X Reg 1.6

I have been experiencing an intermittent problem changing gears. 9 times out of 10 the car seems to drive OK but over the last few months there have been instances when I have not been able to select gear. This has happened when changing from 1st to 2nd and also changing to reverse gear. The clutch has been fully depressed but the gear stick seems to be jammed. After a few times of continually releasing and depressing the clutch, it clears and then I am able to select the gear.
Any ideas on what may be causing this problem would be much appreciated – have taken to main dealer 3 times by car always drives ok when test driving by the engineers. The car has very low mileage – 27,000 so would be surprised if gearbox had gone.

Sounds like a hydraulic problem in the clutch fluid system - possible master or slave cylinder fault. Reverse is always the hardest gear to get because it isn't synchro'd

Or...if you pump the pedal and it seems to improve, it sounds like you have air in the clutch fluid.

the clutch system requires bleeding very common on the astras

Have a garage check for any leaks in the hydraulic circuit and if it needs bleeding and also have them check the gear linkage for wear or adjustment
