Vauxhall Astra Alternator fault . . .
Yesterday the red battery light stayed on Astra 1.6 1997 while driving home 5 miles. There was a slight whining noise from the Alternator (Delco Remy) when we got back. Now today just tried it and when the engine revs the red light goes brighter - with low revs the red light flashes. I have been told I need to replace the alternator - could anything else be damaged - or what do you think? Thanks . . .

Should be just a straight forward case of replacing alternator , but check wiring / connector .

assuming the belt is not loose, check your battery and check the charge rate of the alternator, should be at around about 14 volts with no load and should drop to around 13 volts under electrical load,
