2005 Vauxhall Astra dashboard lights coming on but not starting (intermittent) and exhaust emission light staying on

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2005
Variant: 1.6 Sxi
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Initially the exhaust emission light was coming on intermittently whilst driving. Now, when the key is in the ignition, the dashboard lights are coming on but the car isn't starting (also intermittent). The garage have checked the diagnostics and several faults are being displayed but actual problem is proving hard to isolate. They think that either the engine management system has died and may need replacing (£700!) or it may be the wiring. Any ideas/help much appreciated.

hi,if you go to a vauxhall main dealer they can check the fault codes and update the software for the ecu.they can also check the volts & resistances on various items that may be causing the fault .it may cost a little but will be cheaper than a new ecu.
