Hi the dip stick on my astra seems to show low oil after a short period of time so i top up although there are no obvious signs of a leak and no smoke or signs of a head problem The oil is clean and no warning lights show although they come on prior to starting then go of as normal

Thank you for your time George

Haven't heard of that fault , but on checking ,it seems to be common going by other owners comments below ,

The engine has used quite a lot of oil since I’ve owned it, apparently some of the 1.6 16V engines are just like this.

It is acceptable that engine does use oil so nothing to worry about 1 litre to 1000 miles . I use VX 10w40 semi synth and tend to have a spare 5 litre to use as top up to make it cheaper than buying a litre from a garage .

hi, what milage do you do on average per month, as the 16v have a tendancy to drink about 1ltr every 1000 miles or so i have heard.

Don't know why it uses oil , have to try and find out next time I'm talking to any Vauxhall mechanics.

valve guides are common on these and are replaceable but just not worth the hassle as they just wear out again but this is where the oil is going although its not visable hope this helps

On any car engine if the valve guides are worn / valve stem oil seals worn (if applicable ) you get plumes of blue smoke out of exhaust . You say there is no smoke ?
