Ridiculous fuel cunsumption

2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 16v
Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2003
Variant: 1.4 16v
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
For the past few weeks my car is doing 35 miles from £10 petrol which is strange for a 1.4, I'm sure it was doing at least double that, I'm not sure if there is a fuel leak but the car is smoking from the exhaust a bit more when I'm driving and there is a smell of fumes coming from the exhaust, does anyone have any suggestions, Thanks

It could be your lambda sensor reading excess oxygen which could be from a whole in the exhaust sucking in air between the engine and the sensor. You could also try replacing the sensor but they aren't cheap, get a scope reading from it first if its possible.

Thanks for your suggestion, I think there is a hole in the exhaust because when I exellerate hard in first gear there is a loud vibration, seems ok when in other gears, and also 10 months ago I got an advisory notice after mot which read part of the exhaust system slightly deteriorated, do you have any idea what should be done, Thanks
