Clunking noise from engine on starting car, lasting no more than 20 seconds

when car is started there is a clunking noise coming from the front of the car, this last approx no more than 20 seconds. it doesn't happen all the time and as of yet has not been heard whilst driving the car.

The glow plugs stay hot for about 20 seconds after the car is started, it could just be the combustion- is it a mechanical knocking or just a louder engine knock sound?

it sounds more like a clunking rather than a knocking noise. the oil light seems to stay on a bit longer after all other lights on dashboard have gone out,
