1997 Vauxhall Astra starting/ignition

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 1997
Variant: 1.7TD Manual Estate
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My 1997 1.7TD astra has problems starting, sometimes when i turn the key nothing happens it won't even turn over and all the lights go dim on the dash, this happens for 3 or 4 times then it will eventully fire up, (however it doesn't happen all the time, sometimes it will start first time). I've had a brand new battery fitted and the alternator has been checked and is OK. What is the problem??

Could check all battery and earth connections , especially between engine / gearbox and body .If all ok , could be faulty starter motor .
