2004 Vauxhall Astra car losing power consistently

-my car was mot'ed about 3 weeks ago
-about a week ago my car failed to start, presuming it was because i had been sat in it listening to my radio for a while i thought i might have drained the battery and jump started it, about 2 days later i had the same problem, wudnt start even though i had been driving it literally 15/20 mins beforehand.
-yesterday my car cut out on me consistently while driving and the engine warning light will come on. everything except for the accelerator pedal seems to work when this happens.
-it was ok this morning for two short journeys but when i went out again when i let it idle for a minute or two it just cut out again.
(my original remote locking key is broken and im using the spare key)
(it has had the occasional starting problem but normally ok after waiting a few minutes)
(slight tapping noise from engine area when idling)
any assistance would be greatly appreciated, i used to work in mechanics myself however only achieved level 2 this is a bit out of my league please help. it has an ecotec engine and the car has had no other problems whatsoever from brand new.

We have a Disel Astra that showed similar signs of your problem. Was told it was the "cim" and this needs repalcing and reprogramming.
Have discovered that we have lost coolant and engine overheated and cut out, so check coolant.
Does nayone know if there is a common problem with Astras or vauxhalls losing power?
