Acceleration jerk and poetrol smell

1998 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 16v LS
Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 1998
Variant: 1.4 16v LS
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My car recently broke down when it began to jerk quite violently during acceleration. The AA confirmed that the cat converter had gone and needed replacing along with a whole new exhaust.

After replacing these items, my car now sounds a lot louder and I feel as though I have lost some acceleration. The jerking causing the original breakdown has reduced significantly but still can be felt (especially in gears; 3 and 4). Furthermore, when I turn the fans on in the car, I can now distinctly smell petrol!

The cat converter fitted was not a Vauxhall own brand.

Would appreciate any help you could provide.

Have you opened the bonnet and ran the engine, listning for blowing at all?

Have you checked your spark plugs/ht leads?

Sounds to me like an ignition problem.
