Over heating

1999 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Club
Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.6 Club
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
I have no heat coming through the vents and the temperature guage was moving very rapidly, stopped the car and the guage went back to normal. I have checked the oil and the dipstick is a little cloudy, but the oil cap has a gungy mix around it. Could it be the head gasket

sorry to say but yes its the headgasket gone as this will be the reason for the car overheating

Don't be to quick to blame the head gasket, if you do a lot of short journey's you can get the same residue on the filler cap. It could have over heated due to lack of coolant because of a leak somewhere this would also explain the heater not working, check these first.
