Overheating

I have a problem with my car overheating. i have been told it could be either the thermostat or the fan switch. how can i test the fan switch to see if that is the problem?

run car till temp gauge is just over half way if fan not cut in by then its faulty . it could also be waterpump does it overheat more when your at lights or slow traffic then could be waterpump.or if car heats up very qwik then sounds more like thermostat
