1995 Vauxhall Astra auto,sports light

Hi, Hope i can help, This vehicle should be a 1.4 at the very least as the 1.3 was discarded when the astra f was launched. The gearbox is electronically controlled by an ecu and it indicates a fault by flashing the sports light on the dash. It should normally go into limp mode and engage third gear, it will be slow to pull away but it is only a get you home feature of the car. If it will not engage any gear when cold even manually selecting with the gear lever ie 1,2,3 or reverse i would think that you have an oil pressure problem due to a low level or the oil and/or the filter are degraded enough to stop pressure building until it is hot when the oil is a little thinner. Check the level first. This can be done hot or cold there are to sets of marks on the dip stick for the box, one side marked hot the other cold, it must be checked in park with the engine running.

thankyou very much for your replie,(mrfixit)you are right it just about moves,from cold in a low gear,with the sport light flashing,I drained the auto,oil off,and filled with new fluid,up to the correct marks,cold and hot checks to make sure of the correct level,with no differance at all,is it easy to clean the fillter,in the book it says take it to vaxhalls,thankyou again

How easy is it to clean the filter in the auto box ,and how do you clean it ? thanks
