Vauxhall Astra cuts out and fan light comes on

One day it will feel fine then the next it will feel lumpy and cut out as it cuts out the fan light comes on (cars not over heated) then all the lights come on. The car normally will start back up straight awat but it some times cuts out again a few more times. Does any body have a rough idea what the problem could be?.

You dont say what engine in car , helps the people replying to post and giving advice .
