1996 Vauxhall Astra flashing "sports mode" light when drive selected

a frequent but annoying problem?
Turn on ignition, wait for all lights to go out, start engine, select drive (or reverse), "sport/economy" light starts to flash?
Select neutral, switch off engine, wait 5 seconds, restart engine, engine now revs high then settles (sometimes) select drive, problem gone?
This does not happen every day but is worse in cold weather, sometimes needing up to 3 restarts?????? HELP

You will only find out by getting a diagnostic scan carried , otherwise only guess work .
