2000 Vauxhall Astra starts but shuts down in seconds

My problem started on Saturday the car has been 100% till then.I will start but die soon after I noticed the engine light flashing if I disconnect the battery it will start again but the engine light will flash and the car will shut down again, some one said it has to do with my key losing its code but the locksmith said it might not be the case and he would charge £80 for a new key so before I spend that does anyone have any other ideas

Need to see what is triggering the light and what codes are shown .

hi the guy from the roadside assistance had the code reader plugged in and said it comes up as an immobiliser fault.

There were problems with the ignition barrel / switch on that car also .
