2009 Vauxhall Astra not reversing

Hi my car wont reverse. When gear selected it just sits there but feels like it wants to drive forward. Also when neutral selected it drives. Took this to a garage and they quoted me 1800 for a new gear box! Is this right has anyone on here known of this happening before? One thing tho i had a oil leak and didnt noticevand had to put 2lt of oil in to fill it up. He did say that could have been the fault and caused a problem!

Try getting it diagnosed by a good , acreditted Auto Transmission specialist first .Always better to get a second opinion before committing to any repairs .Could even be an external adjustment to selector set up from what you describe and not as bad as quoted .
