2002 Vauxhall Astra astra car engine seems very hot after short drive following exhaust replacement

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2002
Variant: Mark 4
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I've just driven my car back 7 mins from the garage after having 3 parts of the exhaust replaced. I think the car was parked at the garage after being fixed for about 6 hours. The journey back was a pretty standard slow rush hour journey.

When I got back and parked, from the inside of the car I could smell a hot metally type smell, quite faint.

I opened up the bonnet and things seemed to be hotter than expected. Especially as I had only driven for 7 minutes from one side of town to the other, less than a mile.

I don't know much about the inside of the car, but the heat seemed to be coming from the engine and the 'coolant header tank'.

If I put the ignition on then the temperature gauge would go up to the halfway point, but when the engine was turned on then the temp gauge would go all the way back down to the bottom - maybe that's usual behaviour?

The best idea I guess would be to take it back to the garage, but just wondering if anyone had any ideas/suggestions?

Sure the smells not just new metal I.e. The exhaust and normal.

I found out what the problem was, it's a disease called 'paranoia'! You pointed me in the right direction, thank you!!!
