It'll cost nothing to slacken off the fixing screws for the staple and move it up or out by a mm or so. Retighten securely. If the screws/nuts holding it are too tight, try an impact screwdriver to slacken them - less than a tenner, probably.

Sounds like your solenoid is knackered and not locking or wiring to solenoid is broken at the hinge for the lock signal,first check the wiring where it comes through the tailgate for a broken wire.

You need to remove the rear tailgate panel there will be some screws holding it on but mostly clps that require pulling/prising off.
