I have been quotes over 600 to have my gear box fixed and I just can't afford that

If it's a manual box , get a s/hand box from a breakers yard ?

It varies from scrapyard to scrapyard on cost and dependant on other factors also .Better to phone a few and check what warranty is on box .If you are going to keep the car , would be advisable to replace /check clutch at same time .This link will give you an idea of prices ,
