i had a problem with my car and got a mechanic to work on it anyway cut a long story short i had a recon gearbox put in a brand new clutch and the ecu donecost a few quid the car came back was fine for a week then stoped working mechanic came out and said that hes 90% sure it the gear selector the car lights up but will not go into netural or any gear other then reverse but wont turn over either please help iv foundt a selector but dont want to waste any more money if this is not the case does the gear selector stop the car turning over ?????

On an automatic you would not get starter motor function if you are not able to select neutral or park,If your mechanic was able to by-pass the inhibitor to check the starting system or even use a starter tester to check that side.

You need to find a mechanic with Opcom software or similar,what they will do is acess the gearbox ecu,just like code reading the engine the gearbox ecu stores faults and with Opcom you can read the operating parmeters.
Might be something as simple as performing a powered clutch bleed and clearing the faults.
But it's pointless trying to do something without acessing the gearbox ecu first.
I had one in from another garage a while back,they did nothing wrong but without the right software they hadn't reset the clutch height,result was similar to your fault.

Hes put the machine /reader on and he said when you put the car in neutral the machine says cant find but in reverse it comes up ok in reverse any other gear it cannot read so don't no if I should buy the gear selector

So does that mean if it cant find neutral it won't start
