2003 Vauxhall Astra not idling properly and cutting out when driving

when starting the car sometimes the rev counter fluxes between 800 and below 500 rpm then on occasions it cuts out. I got told to rev it to 3000rpm to sort it temp. today tho the car cut out while on a short journey any suggestions please
