The ignition key will not turn to release the steering lock

Might sound stupid , but using correct key ? Try rocking steering wheel whilst turning key .They do suffer from ignition switch faults , requiring replacing .

I don't know about your car but some cars ignition key do need to be depressed inward with key in its place, and then try turning it whilst rocking the steering from side to side, unlocks it.
