2005 Vauxhall Astra side lights wont go off

Can anyone help? I have a fault with the headlights. The lights will not go off and the control switch has no effect. The only way to turn off the lights is to disconnect the battery. Could this be a fault with the headlamp switch? or is there another possible solution? I have owned the car for 6 years and this is the first time i have experienced this type of fault.
