2000 Vauxhall Astra engine management light comes on intermittently, car cuts out

the car runs fine for a while then the engine comes on and the car loses power and cuts out. This will continue for a while then the light goes out and the car runs fine again.

Try replacing the spark plugs first, it's the cheapest option
