2000 Vauxhall Astra speedo not working

i have recently bought an astra but the speedo does not work.the person i got it from said it stopped working after he had had a new gearbox fitted.i have checked the wiring and changed the speed sensor in the gearbox but it still dosent work can anyone help. I have been told i need to fit an abs hub and then buy an abs signal amplifier to make the speedo work thanks for any help

do you get any abs codes or light on in the car ? if any of these were he fault you would expect to see a light
