2004 Vauxhall Astra random car turns over but wonlt start

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.6 SXi
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I have a 2004 Vauxhall Astra 1.6. The car randomly often turns over at normal speed but won't actually start. It's fine one moment then I'll try it a couple of hours later and it fails to start again. I can jump or bump start it when this happens so I don't think it's the immobiliser. I changed the battery when it started doing this less than a year ago so I don't think it's that either. Also I've noticed I can switch the headlights on dipped and main beam when the ignition is off. Can anyone offer any advice to help.

The headlight thing is normal, not a fault. As for the other probs, i would suggest giving her a FULL service including fuel filter (these are so often forgot) and see if its any better. Make sure the battery is fully charged too.

Take it for a code read, this will tell you if a sensor is failing, i would guess a crank sensor fault

Thanks for the reply. Come to think of it it has only started with the problem since the last service. Perhaps the plugs were dud. It does seem to start without incident when I park it nose down on a hill. It's due a service soon anyway. I did the last one myslef but I ended up taking the car apart to find the fuel filter but in the end I gave up looking. Even the guy who did my MOT couldn't find it and said it could have a lifetime filter already in the tank. The headlights problem only started a few weeks back so can't see how that's normal though.

I had to jump start it again this morning and took it in for a code read. As always when my mechanic has it, it starts every time without a problem. The code read is showing that the fuel mixture was lean but apart from that nothing else. It's been left with my mechanic for a few days in the hope that it'll play up for him. One other question. Would a Vauxhall garage code reader be any different from any other garage or does it diagnose more code probs?

vauxhall Astra fuel filters are under the rear passenger door underneath the car you cant miss it to be honest its a large silver (maybe rusty) cylinder shaped tube with 2 pipes attached to it 1 at either end :)
it does sound like a fuel problem or fuel pump not pushing fuel to the car (injectors) to run the car

Hi there, my car just decided this morning not to start any more. It turns over once but then does nothing and all is silent, when i keep the key turned it tries once or twice but then just starts clicking a couple of times and then silent after a couple of clicks. I know it was cold this morning but have been able to start it in colder conditions. Any ideas?
