1995 Vauxhall Astra won't go past 4000 revs & cuts out at junctions

Hi my car would not start today it was totally dead like the battery had died but i don't think it's that. It has been cutting out at junctions and won't go past 4000 revs. Please can somebody help...i've only had the car 2 weeks!
