2007 Vauxhall Astra turn ignition, just clicks

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2007
Variant: 1.4sxi
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Please bare with me,Im not very good with cars.
Over past month, but now more frequent, when I turn the ignition key the car just makes a clicking noise and the engine wont start.
When the problem first arose,I just left it for a few mins and the car started ok. As time has gone by ive had to leave it longer(up to half hour)before the engine starts.
On taking it to a garage, the mechanic said it appears(but not certain) that I need a new main fuse box(front right of car as you look in).
He could only get the the car to start by turning the ignition key on, removing the front yellow fuse and placing a wire across the front/back "holes".
Obviously I want to sort this problem out,but dont want to replace an expensive part unless necessary.
Any ideas please

Check the wiring and connections at starter solenoid / motor .Also check earth wire from engine/ gearbox to body .

pokerman sounds like a bad earth, check your earth conections to your starter and your battery give them a good clean

Looks like its the relay your mechanic has been bridging, why not try substituting the relay with a similar one to see if thats the problem.
