2003 Vauxhall Astra car wont move after stopping

I stopped at a junction and went into first gear to move off and the car wouldnt move. there was a weird noise when lifting the clutch. tried switching it off and on and still woulnt move but then out of nowhere it went back to normal and drove fine......can someone please help as i dont know what happened and i just bought the car last week.

does this mean I need a new clutch? and if so is it expensive?

Sure it wasn't just a case of not been in gear right ? Any excessive movement at gearstick ?Is it all right since ?
