2006 Vauxhall Astra whining noise and slight vibration when accelerating

When i accelerate a whining noise appears. It is not high pitched but it is not a deep grumble either - it sounds like a electric humming type of noise. When the noise appears i can feel it with a slight vibration through the gear stick when i hold it, and then the vibration goes away in line as the noise goes away. The noise increases in sinc with the increase in revs and then leaves as quick as it takes for the revs to drop. Car has 50000 miles, 2006 year, and in good condition! Drives fine also.

Hard to diagnose without hearing , may be alternator noise .

okay, thanks. The noise is coming from within the engine, and it accurs when pressing the gas in neutral. It starts to appear immediately and drops just as quick as the revs drop. Is there any methods i could do to narrow down what the problem could be? Forgive my ignorance i do not know much about cars

Dont know what would cause " a electric humming type of noise " from inside engine . Usually caused by alternator , timing belt , tensioner etc . Can get noise from water pump also but not that type .Only other thing electrical would be the EHPS pump , but again not inside engine . You will soon need to think about changing timing belt as Vauxhall suggest Model Year 2003 [Petrol] = 6 years or 60,000 miles interval.That may show some cause up .

The alternator light on the dash is now on, so yes definately looks like its the alterator. Just seem strange as the car is not losing any power and the electrics work fine unlike when i have had alternator problems in the past
