2004 Vauxhall Astra powersteering failure

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.6
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
RECENTLY MY POWER STEERING HAS BEEN CUTTING OUT. SOMETIMES WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING AND ALSO SOMETIMES WHEN I FIRST START IT. WHILE DRIVING IT EITHER HAS GONE ALREADY OR CUTS OUT WHILST DRIVING AND THEN WHEN IT WANTS TO STARTS WORKING AGAIN. I NEED TO GET IT FIXED TO GET A NEW MOT BUT DONT HAVE A CLUE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. I HAVE HAD THE ALTERNATOR OUTPUT CHECKED AS ADVISED THIS COULD BE THE PROBLEM BUT THAT WAS FINE. ALSO WAS ADVISED IT COULD JUST BE THE FUSES SO CHECKED THEM ASWELL AND STILL NO ANSWER.HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM OR CAN ANYONE HELP WITH A POSSIBLE SOLUTION PLEASE?

I HAVE NOW BEEN ADVISED THAT IT COULD BE THE ELECTRO HYDRAULIC TRW PUMP FAILING... I NOW WISH TO KNOW 1) IF THERE IS ANY OTHER POSSIBLE THINGS IT COULD BE AND 2) DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I WOULD GET IT FIXED OR WOULD IT BE MORE WORTHWHILE GETTING A COMPLEATLY NEW PUMP?

it def sounds like the pump is the problem. you best option is to get one from ebay or a scrap yard. im pritty sure it comes complete with the sterring rack. most garages could do the job. but the labour will be quite expencive as its prob soming like a 3 to 4 hour job if not longer

Hi,
It is not always the power steering pump, a common mistake. Check the alternator is charging correctly if you have any voltage drop the power steering will fail as it requires full output to work ( i carried out this repair 3 months ago ) Regards Ray
