2018 Vauxhall ADAM overheating

My engine light turned on for a short period of time today, then swiftly turned off. I then went out to the shops and when I turned my car on it was beeping and stating that the engine is overheating. Does anyone know what the issue could be? My engine fan is still spinning I thought it might be the thermostat but I am not sure

First thing to check would be your coolant level when engine cold . If o.k , it could possibly be as you suggest , a faulty thermostat . Other possible causes but would check those first .
