1999 Vauxhall ADAM no gears no drive

teaching nephew how to drive when the gearbox 'cut out'
i can select every gear position without difficulty and there in no noise whatsoever from either the clutch or the gearbox yet it will not drive.
selector linkage is fine and dandy,
oil levels fine and dandy,
driveshafts all checked and ok
everything is working fine as expected yet lift the clutch and nothing, no noise no grinding/rubbing/clunking/scraping or anything that suggests a gearbox or clutch damage issue.
yet there is zero drive no bite nothing.
ive been fixing cars 20 years and this has me utterly baffled

its not an adam its an astra, i selected astra on registration!!!
