1999 Toyota Avensis misfiring at low revs also backfiring

Car: Toyota Avensis
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.6 petrol
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The car misfires (with occasional backfires) at low revs under load, but runs smoothly above 3500 rpm. So going up a hill is like kangaroo petrol unless I drop a gear (or two!) to get the revs up. Revs freely when stationary.

Plugs changed, plug leads changed. No fault shows up when put on electronic tester.

The speed at which the misfire goes away is increasing over time. It used to be 2500 then 3000 now 3500.

Check timing . Timing belt could be worn or jumped .
