gauge has mind of its own when car running it goes to quarter and stays there when car turned off.if you bang the dash it moves to normal at half way but stays there when turned off.drops again when you bang the dash ive had it out and nothing is making stick or catch any ideas

Normal cause of gauge reading low would be thermostat jammed open or temp transmitter / sensor switch . But they usualy wouldn't be affected by banging dash .

if banging the dash makes the gauge move then it must be a fault with the gauge itself, have you checked the circuitry going to the gauge has good contact and no breaks,if this looks fine then try another gauge
