2005 Toyota Avensis losing power when going up hills with thick black smoke, runs normal when the smoke clears.

have a toyota avensis D4D 05 when I'm driving along all of a sudden it will lose power when pulling away or going up an incline and then clear after a plume of black smoke out of the exaustthen its back to normal for a while.
