Skoda Superb skoda superb estate tailgate latch not responding

Car: Skoda Superb
Variant: estate diesel
Model Year: 2015

The manual tailgate (should) open from the rear but is jammed closed. if I thump the Skoda logo there is a short whirring sound, but doesn't make any difference.

You may need to remove the interior trim panel to access the lock mechanism and check lock operation / actuator . Often spraying with WD 40 or similar will suffice .

      Is the trim 'sprung' clipped on as I couldn't see  any screws. Or any leverage points, come to that.
