Car won't shift into any gears from neutral when the engine is running, it is able to shift into gears once engine is turned off.

Sounds like clutch . Check clutch fluid level and master cylinder for any leaks . If not hydraulic fault , looks like wear on clutch assembly and needing replaced

Thanks for the response. If it was wear on mechanical clutch assembly I wouldn't have thought it'd be able to still be put into gear with the engine switched off?

You can change gears in any manual car with the engine off , provided the linkage / cables . selectors are o.k . Nothing to prevent it .
