Not able to accelerate

2005 Saab 9-3 Tid sport

when trying to pull away the car will not accelerate. it goes into gear ok but the revs will not pass 1200 for around 100 feet / 8/10 seconds - then it bites & away no problems. i can hear a very faint rattle when i take my foot off the accelerator - any help & advice i'll be graeful off clever folks!
