2006 Saab 9-3 steering lock malfuntion

The car key will not engage to start car and the dashboard message says ‘steering lock malfunction’ or car key not accepted. I live on the Isles of Scilly and have no access to a SAAB Agent. There is a local garage but will not have any computer equipment for SAAB cars. Is there anything I can do to short cut the problem

Tried another key , tried disconnecting battery for a short time ? Battery voltage o.k ? Check this ,
