Over heating

hi my rover was running smooth then suddenly the engine light came on oil light started flashing and temperature shot up,I let the car cool down then I topped up water,checked oil it was ok but added more anyway temperature still up but car wont tick over now and is draining the battery. It is a working car so need it running asap any ideas please as to what is the problem.

sounds like either thermostat or head gasket

have the engine compression tested to eliminate the head gasket and also check all the pipes for splits just in case but it may be the head gasket that has gone so it will be off the road for a few days to have this done so i hope its not the head gasket
