2002 Rover 45 heating going out!

Car: Rover 45
Year: 2002
Variant: 1.4 manual
My heating is working when it feels like it...I have to turn it to level three because 1 and 2 aren't coming on at all. It will go hot on level 3 for a time..then all of a sudden it starts to go cold. Just trying to get some idea of what this problem could be before I take it to a garage and end up with another big bill to pay. Any advice would be great...Thanks!

First thing to check would be coolant level . Is temp gauge going to normal ? The fault with heater not working on all speeds usually caused by faulty resistor .
