2000 Rover 45 engine cutting out on hot days

Car: Rover 45
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.6 Petrol
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
June 27th this year,a very very hot day and heading for the east coast, after approx 90 miles the engine just cut out. Called the RAC patrolman came, could not find anything wrong. We motored on approx 15/20 miles more, same thing happened again.Another patrolman came and diagnosed petrol starvation,he towed us to a
Garage who lent us a so called courtesy car (It was awful)We collected our car 4 days later they had changed the fuel filter. Drove it home no problem and it has behaved perfectly until last Saturday 1st Oct another very very hot day. After reading various postings I have concluded that the problem is the crank sensor. Is this a reasonable assumption? As a pensioner I can't afford to make too many mistakes.
Another question is,Where is it on the engine?
Thanks very much for any help or advice

Crank sensors often give this kind of fault , usually as the temperature in engine increases. Common fault . Not 100% sure but think you will find the sensor at the back of the engine where it bolts to the gearbox by one screw, possibly 7mm socket/spanner .

I have just suffered a similar problem right in the middle of roadworks, M1! I had thought it may have been a petrol starvation, however after 20 mins the engine restarted and after the breakdown man looked puzzled under the bonnet and the engine ran fine I was on my way!
It was a rather hot day but had been cruising happily at 70 or so, he he, then when I slowed to 50 thru roadworks it died on me in the outside lane! This may explain (your crank sensor) as the engine probably increased in temperature at 50. I had recently suffered an overheating prob (900 miles back) but put that down to high speeds and low water in expansion tank (error!). Will try a new sensor.....
